how to separate mixtures
A mixture is made up of two or more pure substances. Components within a mixture can be broken apart by using a physical process, such as filtration or distillation. Some mixtures are more difficult to separate, but any mixture can be broken down. A compound is a much harder material that cannot be separated by a physical process. Water is an example of a compound that can be stirred, boiled, filtered or frozen but remains the same.
Experiment with sand and salt
Add two teaspoons of salt and two teaspoons of sand to a bowl and stir them together. Then Add 1/2 cup water to the substance and stir until all of the salt dissolves. Place a coffee filter inside a funnel and slide the funnel into the mouth of a jar. Pour the substance slowly through it.
